The Path has long been used as a metaphor for life’s journey and the decisions made along the way.
‘Seek the path that demands your whole being’ – Rumi
Bought up in a Christian home Cope is very familiar with the religious connotations relating to the size and shapes of paths. The straight and narrow suggesting a virtuous, moral route over that of the broad and wide’s potential for wandering, straying and immorality. In contrast the creative path could be considered to be full of twists and turns, with bumps in the road as advantageous catalysts in the process of creating art.
Cope has long been drawn to the triangle shape of the path, photographing weekly this projecting shape extending from her feet like a symbol of optimism, a portal to the future in front of you.
Within this exhibition Cope wanted to create a fantasy space a combination of raw emotion and imagination. Navigational symbols such as road signs and round-a-abouts are situated in contrast to the more domestic intimate spaces which suggest journeys inward. She has also used photography depicting her parents feet to reference the journey as a concept which both solitary and influenced by the people around us.
Cope wants to express through her work the idea that shoes are philosophical vessels which could help to guild us in our search for meaning.
